Tight at the top of the Magners
Ronan O’Gara’s last minute penalty at Thomond Park secured not only victory for Munster in their top of the table clash with fellow Irish Province Leinster, but also ensured that Munster are the first team to claim a place in this season’s Magners League Play-Offs, although a home semi-final is not yet assured.
Results elsewhere saw Ulster climb into the second place, whilst the draw between Ospreys and Cardiff Blues probably did not figure in either team’s ambitions, meant that Ospreys climbed a place in the table and now lie third. Blues, with a game in hand, are still very much in with a chance of a top four finish, whilst Scarlets defeat in Ireland has probably left their fate in the hands of others.
The Magners League now takes a break for a week whilst the focus turns to European competitions, but when it returns four of the top six teams will be in action against each other. Leinster host Ulster whilst Scarlets face Munster and the remaining two teams, Cardiff Blues and Ospreys, are both away. Munster apart, the competition for the remaining Play-Off places is so tight that the battle could go right down to the wire.
